In case you missed it, Former First Lady Barbara Bush was laid to rest Saturday morning in Houston, Texas, at 92 years old.

Mrs. Bush is the former first lady of George H.W. Bush and the mother of George W. Bush. According to her family she was tough, funny, graceful and elegant.

I wasn't alive while she was living in the White House, but I do know she left a legacy behind in Texas. The former First Family call Texas home, and Texans thought of Mrs. Bush as the Mother of Texas.

A few ideas she left behind that won't soon be forgotten are the ideas that a family is built at home and not in society. We can't rely on those in power to make sure our families are on the right track in life. That job must begin in the home.

Mrs. Bush fiercely protected her family, but made sure they stayed connected to their roots. That is something else we can learn from - go far and have your successes, but don't forget where you come from or who might be looking up to you.

Mrs. Bush famously wore fake pearls and a $30 pair of shoes to her husband's inauguration. That goes to show no matter who you are or what you do, you're never too good for thrifty clothes. You don't always have to wear top of the line accessories to look nice.

Some of these ideas are what make America what it is today, and some of them might need to be re-enforced a little.

Regardless, may Mrs. Bush rest in peace and may her legacy live on forever.
