An update on this week's news stories:
Canada:
On Monday in Canada there was a shooting by a 29-year-old who had mental issues and had legally obtained a weapon.
Canada has some of the strictest gun laws in the world. According to BBC, "crime rates in Canada have been on a long decline, but gun-related homicides and gun violence have increased. 31 percent of murders were by a firearm in 2012."
In March of 2018, the Canadian federal government came together to pass a series of gun laws including, "enhanced background checks for licenses will look at a person's entire life history, including a criminal record search, and screening for mental illness associated with violence. Requiring authorization for transporting legally owned restricted and prohibited firearms like handguns and assault weapons."
A message was spread around the mainstream media when the Parkland Shooting occurred about avoiding to post a picture of the shooter after a mass shooting because that gives the shooter what they want, which is attention.
Veteran's Affair Vote:
On Monday, the Senate confirmed Pentagon official Robert Wilkie as Secretary to the Veteran's Affair. A group of senators who have gone on the record about their distaste for the president, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Senator Kamala Harris and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand all voted not in favor of Wilkie's vote. According to stripes.com, "This is the first time in VA history a secretary nominee has received opposition votes.
North Korea:
According to Fox News (and the Associated Press), "An American research group on Monday claimed that North Korea has begun dismantling its main missile-engine test site." The media is saying this a possible sign that Kim Jong-un is holding up his side of he and President Trump's agree they met for in early June.
With these things said, make sure to remember what I have reminded you of here.
