I have literally been waiting all weekend to update you on the latest - there has been so much since Friday at 5pm.
This weekend, society decided to politicize everything again so be prepared to roll your eyes at a few of the recent stories we'll discuss.
Nothing stated today directly affects any of us, but the reason it's important to be informed on is because sometimes we need to know if elected officials/people with platforms are being held accountable. There are several stories, which I will number and explain in chronological order as they happened.
1/ Friday morning news broke that Heather Nauert, who is currently the State Department spokesperson, has been picked and accepted the United Nations Ambassador position previously and famously held by Nikki Haley. Haley served as Governor of South Carolina for six years and is expected to leave the White House at the end of the year.
2/ Not only was that announced, but William Barr was also hired to be the new Attorney General. According to Andrew McCarthy, who served as the Attorney General for the South District of New York. He currently writes for the National Review, and in his December 8 piece, he explains why Barr was an excellent choice for Trump. I'll link it here for you to read.
3/ Friday evening news broke that Mueller suggests Michael Flynn (who was set up by Mueller because Flynn knows everything) does not deserve jail time for his involvement (more like lack thereof) with the Russia investigation. (There is an entire post about this story a few back if you need a reminder.) On another note about this Mueller Memo, it says "Cohen's crime was serious and that he withheld information from investigators on Russia." He is being charged with lying - not with the action. To be clear, the memo says Trump told Cohen to lie about business with Russians during the 2016 campaign, but that could be false.
4/ Friday evening simultaneously we were told former Trump lawyer Micheal Cohen, however, should serve jail time for lying to Congress. This sentencing doesn't mean much, and certainly doesn't mean Trump has done anything wrong. According to the Southern District of New York, which is where this is taking place, "Cohen tried to influence 2016 election and coordination with campaign members," which was instructed by Trump to do. None of that means Trump did anything wrong in that scenario.
5/ James Comey testified behind closed doors on Capitol Hill on Saturday, but claimed to not "know, recall, or remember" anything that was asked on the Hill. Although, he's able to remember everything well enough to write an entire book over it.
6/ Kevin Hart accepted the offer to host the Oscar's after the Academy had struggled to find a host. A few hours later, Hart was under fire for being insensitive to the gay community based on a joke he told his son. Hart stood up for himself, and then declined the host offer. Now the Academy still has no host for the Oscar's.
7/ Kylar Murray from the University of Oklahoma won the 2018 Heisman Trophy, but has since gotten in trouble by his insensitive tweets in previous years offending the gay community.
8/ Christmas music that has been around since the early 1900's is all of a sudden extremely inappropriate and offensive.
9/ The Dallas Cowboys are first in the NFC East after winning 29-23 against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon.
10/ President Trump's Chief of Staff John Kelly is expected to leave at the end of the year. Apparently Chiefs of Staff don't stay longer than two years. In this case, Kelly's employment under the president was a miracle it lasted this long especially for a president who doesn't want a chief of staff.
11/ Nick Ayers - who was Mike Pence's Chief of Staff - declined Trump's offer as his own Chief of Staff, according to the New York Times.
12/ Last, but not least - France is not doing well because Emmanuel Macron is actually a very mean man. The media is telling you the now four-week-long protests are due to gas taxes, but that's not quite the case. In a piece written by The Guardian, it states that Macron "was elected on a centrist reforming programme 18 months ago" because "he understood the anger of those struggling to make ends meet while feeling ignored and economically squeezed." However, Trump supporters across America are claiming the protests to be about populism, and how Trump's agenda has spread worldwide.
The ninth story is newsworthy, but mostly just exciting to talk about.
Now that I have added about four stories from the weekend with much needed details, hopefully the news makes sense!
Hang tight for Wednesday because I'm sure there will be much more, but try not to get too overwhelmed because I will explain!
Have a good day!
